Wilderness Navigation Rebadge information

Information on how to renew your Basic Navigation Badge.

Your Basic Navigation Badge is valid for three years. To find your expiration date, check your profile and hover over the badge. As long as your badge has not expired, you can renew it for free by taking instructor training and instructing at both a Wilderness Navigation workshop and field trip. Here is more detail:

Current Badge Holders

You are required to have an active Basic Navigation Badge to instruct at a Wilderness Navigation Course. To renew the expiration date of your badge, register for the following three activities:

  1. Instructor Training - Discovery Park
  2. Activity 2 (In-Person Workshop)
  3. Activity 3 (In-Person Field Trip)

If you've volunteered as an instructor at Discovery Park in the last 12 months, you're welcome to email Wilderness Nav Leader for an exception to the Instructor Training requirement. Please indicate the dates you last instructed.

Plan ahead! Finding a course that works with your schedule can take time, so it's best to begin looking well before your badge expires.

Expired Badge Holders

Because your badge has expired, you don't have the prerequisites to instruct. To update your badge, you must either:

  1. Retake the Wilderness Navigation Course (at a cost to you), or
  2. Contact Wilderness Nav Leader if you have deep knowledge and experience in backcountry navigation
