We are always interested in adding more intermediate trips to the schedule and becoming an intermediate leader is a great way to help us out!
Before you can sign up to lead a Tacoma Mountaineers snowshoe, you must be on the leadership roster. Leadership qualities, group and individual safety, experience, and level head decision-making are four major components to successful leadership. Therefore, we have minimum requirements for those interested in becoming a volunteer trip leader.
Steps to Becoming an Intermediate Snowshoe Leader
- Be a Basic Snowshoe Leader + Intermediate Snowshoe Graduate (or equivalent1)
- Successful completion of at least two Intermediate snowshoe trips
- Participate as a junior instructor at avalanche safety and snow travels intermediate snowshoe course field trips (Requires Instructor Orientation Seminar)
- Complete two mentored Intermediate snowshoe trips
- Successfully graduate the following courses and have a current badge on your profile:
- Wilderness Navigation
- Wilderness First Aid
- Level 1 Avalanche (AIARE I) certification
- Outdoor Leadership Course (may be completed within one year of becoming a snowshoe leader)
1 A graduate of Basic Alpine Climbing, Alpine Scrambling, or Basic Glacier Climbing who has also completed the Avalanche Rescue or AIARE Level I course is considered equivalent.
Once your application has been submitted and reviewed by the Tacoma Mountaineers Snowshoe committee, you will be assigned a mentor. For those who are not a current Mountaineers leader in any activity, you will need to complete two mentored Intermediate snowshoe trips. For those who are a current leader in another Mountaineers activity (i.e.; Hike Leader), you need to have led a minimum of three trips in the last 12 months and complete one mentored Intermediate Snowshoe trip.
