Tacoma Sailing Committee

The Tacoma Branch Sailing Committee offers two classes targeted at helping members feel comfortable stepping aboard a sailboat and contributing to the fun of sailing the boat on the Salish Sea.

In April, we offer our Basic Crewing/Sailing course to introduce new sailors to the joy of crewing aboard a sailboat on the protected local waters.  We will cover: basic crewing skills, names for all the stuff onboard, basic sail trim, points of sail, staying safe while on a sailboat, what to wear and even learn some useful knots.  This course consists of three classroom sessions, a dockside orientation session and two sails and after successfully attending the classes and completing the sails, you will earn the Basic Sailing Course badge, which will qualify you to go on sail outings with the Mountaineers and take advanced courses.

In May, we offer our Coastal Navigation for Sailors course.  This course will get you comfortable navigating a sailboat on the Salish Sea (within sight of land) for a day sail or overnight cruise and build on the navigation skills learned in the Mountaineer's Basic Crewing course.  This course consists of two classroom sessions plus one on-the-water day sail.

This leaves all summer to connect with Mountaineer skippers and join them on local races, day sails or overnight cruises.
