Basic Climbing Refresher: Crevasse Rescue review

Basic Climbing Refresher Clinics offer Basic Graduates, Glacier Travel graduates and second year Basic Climbing students the opportunity to review and practice skills. Non-members and non-Basic Climbing grads are also welcome if they have the appropriate climbing skills.

This  Seattle Basic Refresher Clinic - Crevasse Rescue - covers the rescue systems used to extract a climber who has fallen into a crevasse while on a Basic glacier climb with two or more rope teams.

Skills to be practiced:

  • Knots used on glacier climbs
  • Pulley rescue systems
  • Safe setup and execution of a rescue system
    Including:

    1) Hold the fall and anchor the rope, including back-up to friction hitch or rope grab.

    2) Safely approach the crevasse, and communicate with fallen climber.

    3) Make a plan, including how to quickly assist a fallen climber who does not respond and may require emergency first aid.

    4) Raising systems, including rope entrenchment considerations. Demonstrate a drop loop 2:1 raising system.
