Basic Climbing Instructor Review #1

Instructor review at the Friends Meeting House for those planning to volunteer with the Olympia Basic Alpine Climbing Course. Attendance is required if you have not instructed at Basic within the last three years, and strongly recommended for all instructors due to updates based on the latest edition of Freedom of the Hills. We are offering two instructor review sessions on January 5 and 6, 2026, and you only need to attend one. This session is scheduled for January 5th.

We are offering two instructor review sessions on January 5 and 6, 2026, and you only need to attend one.

The January 5 session will be held at 6 pm at the Friends Meeting House. Pizza will be provided.

This year, we strongly recommend that all instructors attend, even if you have taught recently. We have updated portions of the course to align with the latest edition of Freedom of the Hills, and it’s important that all instructors are familiar with these changes to maintain consistency in how skills are taught.

Attendance is required if this is your first year instructing with the Basic course or if it has been more than three years since you last instructed.

During the review, we will cover:

  • Skill demonstrations
  • How we teach key techniques
  • Time for Q and A

Please only sign up if you plan to volunteer with the Olympia Basic Climbing Course this year. This is not a free skills practice. Review Freedom and refresh your knots beforehand.

The purpose of this session is to ensure all instructors teach skills in a consistent way. There are many “right” ways to climb, but we don’t want to confuse students with mixed instruction.
