Climbing Course

Intermediate Glacier Travel and Winter Mountaineering

Intermediate Glacier Travel including 2-person crevasse rescue techniques; running belay with pickets or ice screws; winter camping and outdoor living in winter. AIARE level 1 is prerequisite. Part of the Kitsap Intermediate Alpine Climbing Course package. Consists of classroom session and overnight field trip with one summit planned.

Learn more skills to travel over steep snow and glaciers efficiently and with confidence. 

Prerequisites: Intermediate Alpine Mountaineering I/Self-Rescue I course or equivalent, and AIARE Level I course.

Applicable Standards:

●  Winter mountaineering, including:

  • Winter camping and survival

    ▪  Application of climbing skills in winter conditions

    ▪  Emergency winter shelters

Required Equipment

10 Essentials for the field trips.

Winter-rated  climbing and camping gear - sleeping bag, warm gloves and winter clothing for climbing.

Beacon, probe, shovel.

2 pickets with lanyard/draw.

Ice axe and crampons; harness with alpine rack.

Flotation may be required depending  on snow conditions.
