Winter Mountaineering - this is the first of two classroom sessions for the course, covering winter camping and snow travel.

Session one will focus on trip planning, winter camping and traveling in avalanche terrain. We will introduce rescue methods later in the session to so students can practice prior to the second classroom session. These will be 6:1 Drop Loop and Drop End 3:1.
We will cover:
- Emergency snow shelters (anticipate building at least one during the first field trip);
- CALTOPO tools for terrain and snow cover analysis that are useful in winter trip planning;
- Equipment useful in winter travel and steeper snow and ice travel conditions - ice tools and ice screws, primarily;
- AIARE and Parks Canada tools for avalanche terrain analysis;
- Review of reported accident and near-miss cases related to winter and steep snow travel.
