This seminar provides new and experienced trail runners with information to help them become effective trail running leaders for the Mountaineers. This seminar is a requirement -- along with a mentored trail run(s) and/or committee approval -- to becoming a new official trail run leader for the club or if you have become a trail run leader in the past year. (Exceptions granted for individuals have another leader badge with The Mountaineers.) It is encouraged for other trail run leaders who have not previously participated in the Seminar.  The workshop is free and open to all Mountaineers members, but please register online so we can schedule the right number of instructors.

We will discuss common leadership decision-making challenges and real-life leader experiences.

Seminar learning outcomes:

  • Ability to determine which kinds of trips you want to lead; knowledge of how to attract and screen participants.
  • Understanding of the expectations and preparation for the role of a trail running leader for the Mountaineers.
  • Preparation and confidence to handle common challenges you will encounter leading groups on the trail.
  • Understanding of the runners you will serve and the Foothills trail running committee and its work and goals.
  • Familiarity with club standards and rules for trail runs and general relevant club procedures for leaders (e.g., steps to take to report an emergency or safety issue). The Mountaineers is fortunate to have many very experienced runners and trip leaders; this seminar's goal is  to familiarize  everyone, regardless of experience level, with the same leadership principles, expectations, and club rules/procedures.
  • Readiness to take the next steps on the journey of becoming a trail run leader for the Mountaineers!

Online seminar on Wednesday May 7th from 6:30-8:30pm. (We are scheduling 2 hours, but may end 30 minutes early.) A Zoom link will be shared with participants prior to the event.
