New Member Events: Fall 2018

All new Mountaineers Members, welcome! We are excited to have you join our community of walkers, climbers, hikers, paddlers, photographers, naturalists, sailors, skiers, and more! We're a big organization with something for everyone, and we want to make it easy for you to jump right in!  

Unsure of where to start? Read on for a list of great events this Fall to get your feet wet.

Sep 5 | OLYMPIA ADVENTURE SPEAKER SERIES:  ERDEN ERUC 'S SOLO CIRCUMNAVIGATION

Rower Erden Eruc will present on his successful human-powered solo expedition around the world. He is the first to complete this  journey, undertaken over the course of 5 years. Erden is the recipient of the 2013 Citation of Merit from the prestigious Explorers Club, and one of Outside Magazine's 'Adventurers of the Year' in 2013. He has 15 registered Guinness World Records.

Sep 10 | TACOMA HIKER & BACKPACKER SOCIAL AT THE SWISS 

Join the Tacoma Hiking and Backpacking community for a get-together at The Swiss. Members and non-members are welcome to come and get to know one another, share ideas, and ask questions about the committee.

Sep 20 | BEWILD WITH ANDREW MCLEAN

Renowned skiier Anddrew McLean is a Black Diamond athlete, proud father, skimo racer, and the first person to ski all three peaks in the 'Alaska Family': Father Denali, Mother Sultana (Foraker), and child Mt. Hunter. Join us to hear his stories of backcountry mountaineering!

Sep 20 | Tacoma Open House & Special Presentation: What I did Last Summer 

All current and prospective members are encouraged to join us to learn about The Mountaineers, ask questions of activity leaders, talk to other outdoor enthusiasts, and hear about the recent thrilling exploits of our member's summer outings.

Sep 24 | MEET THE MOUNTAINEERS + GEAR GRAB 

Join us for our next Gear Grab, open to members and non-members. Come to meet our activity leaders and learn about winter and spring course offerings, and score from other outdoor enthusiasts at our used gear sale. 

Sep 27 | TACOMA AUTHOR EVENT WITH STEVE SWENSON: KARAKORAM

World-class alpinist, author, and former president of the American Alpine Club Steve Swenson has been climbing for nearly half a century- and the best mountain climbing in the world, Steve will tell you, is in the Karakoram. He has been climbing there since 1980 and has a perspective on the land and its culture like few others. Come see this special presentation of his book Karakoram: Climbing Through the Kashmir Conflict.

Sep 29 | KITSAP YEAR END CELEBRATION 

Join your fellow Kitsap Mountaineers for a celebration of the year outdoors, successful summits, hikes and kayaks, and to recognize our awesome volunteers and course graduates.

Sep 29 | BELLEVUE MOUNTAINFILM WORLD TOUR 

Premier film festival Mountainfilm visits Bellevue! These hand-picked short films are dedicated to educating, inspiring, and motivating audiences. It will touch on issues that matter, cultures worth exploring, environments worth preserving, adventures worth pursuing, and conversations worth sustaining. Don’t miss out on experiencing this one-of-a-kind film festival from Telluride, CO.

Oct 1 | Meet The Foothills Mountaineers

Outdoor enthusiasts who live on the I90-I405 corridors are invited to check out their 'home branch' at a fun social and information session. Meet members of our dynamic activity committees from trail running to alpine scrambling, and find out about how to get involved. The program will also include a guest speaker.

Oct 2 | Adventure Writing Workshop with Charlotte Austin

Join Charlotte Austin to learn the tricks of the trade, share secrets of the travel writing industry, and discover helpful hacks to craft your individual story. No experience is necessary; just bring an open mind, a laptop or notebook, and your sense of curiosity.

Oct 3 | WALKING THE WILD: 1200 MILES ON THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST TRAIL

Join us as we host long-distance hiker Brian Lewis for a talk on his 1200 mile hike of the Pacific Northwest Trail, a path that is more remote and less maintained than the PCT.  Brian will share photos and stories from his trips, along with information about gear and what it takes to prepare for a hike of this scale.

Oct 3 | Olympia Adventure Speaker Series: Marko Pavela’s Adventures South of the Border

Olympia Mountaineers Marko Pavela will present on his recent adventures to Mexico, including a descent of the Chorreadero, a 4 day packrafting trip down the Rio la Venta, and visiting fantastic sites like the Arco del Tiempo. Pavela will offer insights into planning self-supported international adventures, as well as information for beginning packrafters and canyoneers.

Oct 7 | Everett Branch’s Annual Salmon Bake

Everett Mountaineers are invited to the annual branch Salmon Bake at the Masonic Park east of Granite Falls. The branch will provide salmon, potatoes and corn, asking attendees to bring salads, side dishes, and desserts to share. Friends and family are welcome to attend.  

Oct 11 | MountainFilm – Seattle

Oct 18| Tacoma Open House & Author Event: Day Hiking Rainier with Tami Asars

We will be hosting Mountaineers author Tami Asars as she walks us through hikes from her new book Day Hiking Mount Rainier, exploring the ins and outs of the hinterlands at the base of our giant volcano. Learn about her favorite hikes on and near Mount Rainier National Park through an interactive slideshow. Be sure to stick around after the event to meet Tami and have your guidebook signed.
