The Everett Branch is seeking an interim Branch Chair to finish the last 2 years of the current 3-year leadership cycle. This is a meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunity for someone who’s excited about supporting our broader Mountaineers community, strengthening volunteer connections, and helping the branch continue to grow and thrive.

Whether you’ve led a committee, taught a course, or are new to The Mountaineers and simply want to give back in a bigger way, stepping into this role is a chance to develop leadership skills, build relationships across the organization, and shape the future of the Everett Branch - all while being supported by the outgoing Branch Chair, fellow volunteers, and Mountaineers staff!

Goal of Position

The Everett Branch Chair leads and coordinates the branch’s efforts to serve its membership and uphold The Mountaineers mission. This includes supporting high-quality courses, activities, and volunteer experiences that foster exploration, conservation, and community.

The Chair supports the work of Branch Council members (officers and activity chairs), facilitates meetings, ensures communication across committees, and represents Everett in organization-wide leadership.

Activities and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the Everett Branch Charter is current and followed.
  • Collaborate with Branch Council to define a local strategy that aligns with The Mountaineers broader mission.
  • Organize and lead Executive Committee/Branch Council meetings.
  • Support and mentor activity committee chairs and officers.
  • Promote strong communication and coordination between committees, other branches, and Mountaineers staff.
  • Represent the Everett Branch at monthly Branch Leadership Committee (BLC) meetings.
  • Assist the Branch Director in representing Everett at the Board of Directors level.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate handling of any volunteer or member issues, following organizational protocols.
  • Promote volunteer recognition efforts across the branch.
  • Encourage succession planning for key roles including Chair-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, and committee chairs.
  • Support the Treasurer in maintaining a balanced branch budget and overseeing responsible financial practices.
  • Help coordinate major branch-wide events, such as the annual banquet or volunteer appreciation gatherings.

Length of Service

The Branch Chair normally serves a three-year leadership role. In this case, you would step into the chair role to finish the last 2 years of a 3-year leadership cycle already in progress. The typical chair progression is outlined below:

  • Year 1: Chair-Elect (A learning year to shadow the Branch Chair, get familiar with branch leadership, and prepare to step into the role next year.)
  • Year 2: Branch Chair (you would enter the leadership progression here with significant support and mentorship from the outgoing chair for several months to make up for missing the Chair-Elect opportunity)
  • Year 3: Branch Chair & Mentor (Finish the 3 year term and provide mentorship to the new Chair-Elect.)

Time Commitment

  • Attend and facilitate bi-monthly Branch Council meetings (6x/year).
  • Participate in monthly BLC meetings (virtual).
  • Attend the Everett Annual Banquet
  • Maintain availability to respond to branch-related emails and phone calls within a few days.
  • Support the Treasurer with the annual budget process (June) and midflight analysis (March)

Suggested Experience

  • Passion for The Mountaineers mission and values.
  • Prior involvement in Everett activity committees and/or leadership roles.
  • Skills in communication, organization, and collaboration.
  • Experience in team leadership, mentoring, or volunteer coordination is helpful.
  • Ability to listen well, relate to a variety of personalities, and help resolve issues constructively.

Support and Reporting

  • How-to eLearning course: Branch/Committee Chair Training eLearning Series
  • Works closely with the next Chair-Elect, Past Chair, Branch Director, and Branch Council.
  • Supported by Vice President of Branches and Mountaineers staff in leadership development, member services, finance, communications, and more.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to shape the direction of the Everett Branch and support a thriving volunteer community.
  • Develop leadership and strategic planning experience.
  • Help ensure a welcoming, inclusive, and impactful branch environment.
  • Access to pro deals with Black Diamond (typically 40–50% off), with more partner discounts on the way.
  • After one year in the role, you’ll receive a branded Executive Committee jacket from a brand partner, such as Black Diamond.
  • Every fall, your choice of either 30% off a course or one free adult membership.
  • Every year, a one-time-use 50% discount code for a Mountaineers Book.
