In recent years, we’re hearing more and more about neurodivergence, which we most commonly associate with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism, but also includes other conditions. With a greater spread of information, decreased stigma, and better diagnostic capabilities, more people are being diagnosed with these conditions. At the same time, many within the neurodivergent community do not consider their neurodivergence to be a disorder, but rather a less-typical but not pathological way of thinking. With uncertainty about neurodivergence, it can lead to discomfort for well-meaning staff in how to best support participants. While discomfort can lead to disconnection, understanding builds connection. In this presentation, Michelle Lange, Psy.D., herself a neurodivergent therapist, will provide information about the current state of understanding of neurodivergence and how to support program participants who identify as neurodivergent.
