Backpacking Basics

Develop the skills and capability to spend the night in the backcountry! This course will leave you with the knowledge and safety to visit some of the most remote and beautiful places the wilderness has to offer. Taught by a community of experienced outdoor enthusiasts, leave with confidence to join our club trips or even venture out on your own. Open to all Mountaineers Branches.

Hands on course for both new and returning  backpackers

  • Essential Backcountry Skills
  • Modern Gear Selection
  • Trip Planning
  • Route Selection
  • Staying Found and/or Navigation Skills
  • Trail Emergency Preparedness and/or Wilderness First Aid
  • Nutrition
  • Fitness
  • Ultralight Packing
  • Leave No Trace
  • Stewardship

Prerequisites

  • None!
    • Only an aptitude for learning and the appropriate physical conditioning (Depends only on your goals...PCT or an overnight? Doesn't matter, we can help enable you to reach that goal)

Graduation requirements

  •  Attend all three (3) lectures
  • Attend both the gear demo and gear practical field seminars
  • Complete three (3) backpacking trips, one (1) of which must be a multi day trip
  • Complete the "Low Impact Recreation" Seminar
  • Earn a Stewardship Credit
