Advanced Backpacking Skills

The recipient of this badge has acquired advanced backpacking skills through trip experience, including navigation and first aid.

DESCRIPTION OF SKILLS

The recipient of this badge has demonstrated advanced backpacking skills. Grant this badge if:

  • The student has planned and participated in at least three successful backpacking trips within the previous two calendar years, of which at least one trip is two nights or more.
    • Car camping does not count.
    • Trips may be with The Mountaineers or private trips. Please note that The Mountaineers do not take responsibility for members' private trips.
    • Trips may not be a trip with an outfitter or guide service in which the food, gear, and route planning is done by someone else.
  • The student has completed a field navigation class and an outdoor-oriented first aid class within the past three years, or can clearly demonstrate these competencies from other sources.
    • Navigation could include Wilderness Navigation, Staying Found, or equivalent. If the student can only show classroom or eLearning training, he or she needs to show practical field experience applying these principles.
    • First aid could include WFA, MOFA, Trail Emergency Preparedness, or equivalent. If the student can only show classroom or eLearning training, he or she needs to demonstrate a good understanding of the principles as they apply to a backcountry emergency.

WHAT DOES THIS BADGE ALLOW ME TO DO?

Unless otherwise noted, all of The Mountaineers backpacking trips are open to any guest or member. This receipt of this badge is a means of demonstrating your skill proficiency.

HOW DO I GET THIS BADGE?

Unless this badge is directly awarded upon completion of a backpacking course or clinic, anyone desiring a Backpacking Skills badge should submit the Backpacking Skills Equivalency Application. Applications will be sent to the applicable Backpacking Chair for review, and it is that person's responsibility to review the applicant's information, follow-up as needed, and make the decision to grant the appropriate badge, assuring that the qualifications are met.
