Looking for a versatile hauling system with high mechanical advantage? The 7:1 Double Mariners system will certainly get the job done. It is also easy to construct with minimal gear, and it is readily constructed as an add-on to a traditional 3:1 Z pulley system. The technique works well for glacier travel, especially if you need a high mechanical advantage crevasse rescue system when travelling on a short glacier rope (e.g., 30 meter rope). It is also a great way to rescue or assist a follower on a rock or alpine climb, and a good way to haul a heavy bag of gear up a route.
