Interested in helping to teach in this year's Basic Sea Kayak Course pool and/or lake sessions? This class is designed to help brush up on how to teach the skills we will be teaching to our Basic Class students. Will be held at American Lake.
You should hold the Basic Sea Kayaking badge, or equivalency. Last year's graduates are encouraged to participate; you will find the information helpful to hear a second time, and we can use you as a helper! Expect to be mostly a "safety boater", but you still might get a chance to do some demonstrating and coaching. Note that some of our techniques evolve and it is good to learn the latest. There will be an emphasis on how to rescue a paddler in trouble, for obvious safety reasons. This might be your first opportunity to learn these techniques.
As this clinic is for the Tacoma Basic Sea Kayaking Course, preference will be for those assisting in the pool or lake sessions in this course. Other chapter's instructors may attend with leaders permission if they wish to see how we "do it".
Dress for immersion- you WILL get wet practicing rescues. Neoprene hood is a good idea. Bring a CAG or equivalent so you stay warm when standing around onshore. Bring lunch.
Wheels are an option. The gate to the boat ramp (and car access) is open, and wheels are a welcome relief to get your boat to the launch.
Most of the day will be spent with the lead instructors doing the refresh. For the leads: preference will be given to those with, or working on, ACA certification.
Harry Todd Park, suited and ready to paddle at 9 AM.
Required Equipment
Normal kayaking equipment. You do not need a chart, compass, or fire starter.
