Sea Kayak Leadership Development - San Juan Islands Archipelago Circumnavigation

Thinking of leading trips in the San Juans? This 7 day, 6 night leadership development clinic will help you get there.

  • Sea Kayak IV/V
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 60.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 20 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 3 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 4.0 kts
  • Pace: moderate to brisk

Will launch from Washington Park, Anacortes July 9th, time TBD.

First, this is not a "pleasure paddle" in the San Juan's.  Each participant will be required to plan the entire 8 day trip, and lead one or more of the days on water.  Scenarios will be added at trip leaders discretion.  We will utilize the currents to facilitate travel between the islands.  Each day will be full, with in- depth post-trip discussion and debriefing.  Incident management, trip planning, and navigation  will be stressed.  We will cover communication with VTS via vhf radios.

There will be parking fees for leaving your vehicle at Washington park, as well as nightly camping fees while on most of the islands, payable by cash only.

Participants must have kayak camping experience at least a month prior to the trip.   Participants must be prepared to bring 24 liters of water, and 9 days of food on the trip.  Participants must also feel comfortable paddling in currents up to 4 kts, wind to 20 mph, and seas of 3 feet.

This clinic will not substitute for an Incident Management clinic or a Tidal currents clinic for Intermediate Kayaker certification.  It will also NOT meet the leadership clinic requirement to be a kayak trip leader.

Open to mountaineers members only.

Proof of Covid vaccination required.
