eLearning (course): Wilderness Navigation
Activity 1: Online Map, Compass and GPS - Online Classroom
Activity 1 is a 7 day, self-paced online course. Students typically spend 4-7 hours on it. This activity, including all quizzes and exercises, must be finished by midnight on the final day. The deadline is strict. Those who fail to meet this deadline will not be able to continue with Activities 2 & 3, will lose their course fees, and will not receive course credit.

Activity 1 covers the five core principles of wilderness navigation:
- Measuring and Plotting a Bearing
- Map Basics
- Declination
- Ethic of Self-Reliance
- Situational Awareness
You will learn fundamental skills using a compass, altimeter, coordinate systems, and GPS. In Caltopo, you will create a route and a custom map. This activity also introduces the Five Route Finding Questions and helps you develop a backcountry trip plan.
The course link to the online platform (Co-Assemble) will be provided via email at least two days before the start of the activity.
All work must be completed by midnight on the final day of Activity 1. There are no exceptions. Students who do not complete the activity by this deadline will be automatically cancelled from the course, and no refund or credit for your work will be given. Please manage your time accordingly.
Important note on Required Equipment
You must have the required equipment at the start of Activity 1. See the Required Equipment and Course Materials tabs on the course page for details and links.
You do not need to buy a textbook for this course. Two excellent books are recommended as supplementary reading, but it's your call if you want to get one.
NOTE TO INSTRUCTORS
Activity 1 only requires one instructor, however all instructors for the course will receive a link to the eLearning material when it launches to preview the material.
Online - Coassemble. Link will be sent a couple of days before the start of the course in the Welcome email from the activity leader.
