eLearning (course): Wilderness Navigation
Activity 1: Online Map, Compass and GPS - Online Classroom
Activity 1 is a 7 day online course, to be completed within the open timeframe at your own pace. Students typically spend 8 hours on this activity. Students who do not complete this activity, including quizzes and exercises, by midnight on the 7th day, cannot proceed to the next activity. They will forfeit their course fees and not receive credit for their work.

Activity 1 covers the five core principles of wilderness navigation:
- Measuring and Plotting a Bearing
- Mastering Map Basics
- Understanding Declination
- Owning the Ethic of Self-Reliance, and
- Situational Awareness
Activity 1 also includes discussion of the compass, coordinate systems, altimeter, GPS basics, and introduces trip planning.
You will receive a welcome email at least 2 days prior to the start of this activity with the link to the online course, start and end date reminders, and resource information.
All work must be completed by midnight on the 7th day of the activity to successfully complete the course. There are no exceptions. Students who do not complete the activity by this deadline will be automatically cancelled from the course, and no refund or credit for your work will be given. Please manage your time accordingly.

WHILE BOTH RECOMMENDED BOOKS ARE EXCELLENT, ONE WILL SUFFICE.
Online - Coassemble. Link will be sent a couple of days before the start of the course in the Welcome email from the activity leader.
