If you're a tree-lover, this is the backpack trip for you! We'll walk across Ross Dam, then hike along the shore of Ross Lake to Big Beaver Camp which has bear boxes and tent platforms. After setting up camp, we'll explore up the Big Beaver Trail to marvel at some of the oldest, largest and impressive cedars left on the planet.

Day One: from the Ross Dam trailhead, hike down and across the dam, then follow the Big Beaver Trail along the west side of Ross Lake to camp. Total miles: 8, elevation gain: 500', elev loss: 1000'. Once camp is set up, there will be an optional hike up the Big Beaver Creek Trail as trail conditions allow.

Day Two: after breakfast, we'll break camp and make the hike back to the trailhead, arriving back at the cars by 2pm.

About Basic Backpacking Field Trips

The Basic Backpacking Field Trip is the final scheduled activity of the Basic Backpacking Course.  For most students it will be their first overnight trip in the backcountry.  Basic Backpacking Field Trips are usually single-night trips along Easy or Moderate routes that do not present any unusual technical challenges.
