Ross Dam & Big Beaver Creek

This is an excellent early-season, beginners backpack along the lovely west shore of Ross Lake, to the world-famous lower reaches of Big Beaver creek where giant, ancient Western Red Cedar and Douglas-fir trees (some up to 1000 years old) grow among the marshes along the rushing milky green water. Six miles from Ross Dam, just before the bridge over Big Beaver Creek, is the first camping option at Pumpkin Mountain Camp. If weather permits, nice views and a swim in the lake can be had at Big Beaver Landing (boatman’s camp only). Turning left (northwest) on the trail up the creek, one can happily explore for miles in the ambiance of the primeval forest, and if you wish, camp 11.5 miles from the dam, at Thirty-nine-Mile Creek), before turning back the way you came. Ross Lake resort also runs a boat from the dam up to Big Beaver Landing. Many camping options are available along the Big Beaver Creek and Little Beaver Creek trails, including a loop hike of 37 miles (take the boat to Little Beaver Creek and hike back to Ross Dam). For an early season hike, usually snow free by June, hike to Little Beaver , Pumpkin camp, or 39 Mile Camp. Backcountry Permits are available the morning of your hike or up to 1 day prior at the Marblemount Ranger Station and Wilderness Info. Center.
