Basic Bikepacking Course
Combine your backpacking and off-pavement cycling skills to experience the joy of travelling off-the beaten path on all types of terrain. Go further than on foot on singletracks trails, gravel and remote logging roads carrying all your essential gear! In this course you will learn how to pack and carry overnight gear on your bike and how to perform common field maintenance tasks.

This course provides a solid foundation in Bikepacking. Topics are clothing, personal & group gear, loading & carrying gear, trip planning & preparation, camp setup & bike field maintenance, and traveling with a group. Successful completion will allow the student to participate in Bikepack outings. (Click "MORE+" below)
(NOTE: An E-bike is not allowed in this course. )
Registration Process
- Please read all details below.
- Fill out the Registration Form before registering for the course. It takes about 20 minutes and provides us with background on you, your bike and gear, and your experience. Instructors do not need to fill out this form.
(This is a Google Form. If you don't have an account with Google and run into problems with the survey, email the course leaders and we'll send the questions to you.)
Course Prerequisites include:
- Students must own (or have the capability to rent or borrow) a mountain bike or gravel bike and be capable of riding over an extended period of time/miles, primarily off-pavement, on gravel and/or singletrack trails.
- You must have recent overnight back-country camping experience.
- Participants must be capable of riding up to 25 miles in a given day, trip and terrain dependent.
Course and Graduation Requirements
Attend seven sessions, which include four evenings at the Seattle Program Center, a Benchmark Ride, a Check-Ride / Gear Shakedown field trip, and an overnight field trip. You must also have or acquire the Low Impact Recreation badge before being allowed to graduate. The seven sessions are listed and described in Course Requirements tab below. Successful completion will allow the student to participate in Mountaineers Bikepacking outings.
Pay attention to the dates and ensure you are registered for each event. Be sure to register for a Benchmark ride:
- Session 1: Bike Social and Info Evening, Meet & Greet
- Session 2: Introduction to Bikes, Gear, Clothing, bike bags
- Session 3: Benchmark Ride (only one is required from several choices)
- Session 4: Bike Field Maintenance Clinic
- Session 5: Check Ride: Full-gear day-trip shakedown of bike-packing gear
- Session 6: Trip Planning, Logistics, Field trip preparation, etc.
- Session 7: Field trip: Overnight bikepacking trip
And complete the Low Impact Recreation badge (online course) if you don't already have it.

- Mountain Bike or Gravel Bike (if you do not know what qualifies as a mountain or gravel bike, please inquire with course leader. You must own one before course start. E-Bikes not allowed but will be under consideration for future courses.)
