The Mountaineers Gala 2019

Adventure with purpose

Saturday, April 13, 2019
fremont studios, seattle
6pm- 10pm

SPECIAL GUEST: JIMMY CHIN
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: HELEN ENGLE
More Information

UPDATE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18

Due to an overwhelming demonstration of support, The Mountaineers Gala 2019 is currently sold out! We are diligently working with table captains to find room to open up more tickets. To place your name on a wait list please email development@mountaineers.org.

The Mountaineers is a community united by an appreciation for adventure and driven by a sense of purpose to give back. For more than 100 years we have redefined limits, set new standards in outdoor education through volunteer-led courses and award-winning books, and fiercely defended the outdoor experience.

We invite you to join us for an evening to celebrate our adventures, from the small yet fierce to the big and bold. Honoring the lifetime achievements of Helen Engle and celebrating with special guest Jimmy Chin, we'll raise a glass while raising funds to support the visionaries who inspire us to get outside, discover what's possible, and grow together.

Gala proceeds benefit the programs of The Mountaineers. Together, we help people explore, conserve, learn about, and enjoy the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Special Guest: Jimmy Chin

2016-06-29 Athlete Portraits Jimmy Chin Clayton Boyd10525 (1).jpgMountaineer, alpinist, and skier Jimmy Chin is one of the most sought-after and recognized adventure sports athletes, photographers, and filmmakers working today. As a 15-year veteran of The North Face Athlete Team, Jimmy is one of the only people to ski Mount Everest from the summit and climb the first ascent of the Shark’s Fin on Meru. Jimmy has been profiled in numerous publications including National Geographic, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, GQ, People, and The New Yorker.

As a filmmaker, Jimmy has directed documentaries, TV and commercial projects. His film Meru won the Audience Choice Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and made the 2016 Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary. His latest film capturing Alex Honnold’s historic El Capitan climb, Free Solo, won the TIFF People’s Choice award in 2018 and is up for a 2019 Oscar for Best Documentary.

The Mountaineers Lifetime Achievement Award: Helen Engle, 1926-2019

HelenEngle OlympicNationalPark.jpegThe Mountaineers Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to those who demonstrate outstanding achievements in conservation and advocacy, influence in outdoor education, and contributions to mountaineering history.

In 2019, we are proud to honor the lifetime achievements of Helen Engle. It is with sadness that we share the news that Helen, a lifelong conservationist and 66-year Mountaineers member, passed away in March, surrounded by friends and family. You can learn more about her incredible life and impact in Remembering Mountaineer & Conservationist Helen Engle.

Helen embodied the history and heart of The Mountaineers with an insatiable appetite for learning, uniting people, and teaching about the impact of our conservation legacy. Helen devoted her life to protecting the places she loves. This led her to become a founding  member of several leading Washington organizations including the Tahoma Audubon Society, Washington Environmental Council, Washington Wilderness Coalition, The Arboretum Foundation, Nisqually Land Trust, and Citizens for a Healthy Bay in Tacoma. Her life’s work and exceptional leadership is an inspiration to outdoor advocates past, present, and future.

Read more about Helen in The Mountaineers Retro Rewind.

Award to be presented to Helen's family by Martha Kongsgaard.
