Carbon Footprint Reduction

Carbon Footprint Reduction

Members are invited to contribute to our Carbon Footprint Reduction efforts to reduce the collective impact of The Mountaineers community.

As enjoyers of the natural world and advocates for our climate, The Mountaineers community is committed to leading the way in reducing the environmental impact of outdoor recreation.

Thanks to community programs and support from our members, we’ve begun to address the carbon footprint of our facilities through several energy reduction projects at our Seattle and Tacoma Program Centers. We have retrofitted all the lighting to LED at both facilities. We installed solar panels and replaced the gas fireplace with electric in Seattle. In Tacoma, we’ve replaced the natural gas furnaces with energy-efficient heat pumps, and will install solar panels in January 2023.

Donations to The Mountaineers will offset the overall carbon footprint of our outdoor community by funding additional modifications to our facilities and operations, toward our goal of achieving Net-Zero carbon emissions.

Topping our list of next projects to be funded is the installation of heat pumps to heat and cool the Seattle Program Center. Reaching Net-Zero carbon emissions at our Seattle Program Center will allow us to save about 7,260 therms of natural gas and 85,000 lbs of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere a year. This carbon offset is equivalent to taking eight gas-powered cars off the road each year.

Your gift today will fund this important work and lessen the environmental impact of The Mountaineers.
