Abigail is an active kid with a “goofy personality” who loves being outdoors and making new friends. Her mother, Rachel, works hard to provide for her, parenting alone because her family is back home overseas. Thanks to Mountaineers donors, Abigail was able to use a scholarship to attend overnight camp at Stevens Lodge this summer.
“It meant so much to us when we were granted the scholarship. Having the opportunity to give this to my daughter — it’s nothing but precious,” Rachel told us.
Scholarship recipients like Abigail are why we’re dedicating Giving Tuesday to our Mountaineers Access Program scholarship fund. Every donation to The Mountaineers on December 2, 2025 will go directly to fund scholarships.
Early giving is open now — there’s no need to wait.
Your donation will help Mountaineers of all ages learn skills and find belonging outdoors.
In a typical year, about 20% of our scholarship recipients are youth. Youth programs create foundational experiences that turn into a lifelong love of the natural world. They build confidence, curiosity, and leadership skills for the next generation.

“By participating with The Mountaineers, Abigail gets to learn being far from me, taking care of herself, making sure she is responsible for her things, the skills of making new friends, playing games… It made me proud to see that my daughter was able to take care of herself, have all her belongings still at the end of camp, and hear her camp friends were so happy to know her,” shared Rachel. She was unsurprised that Abigail came home from camp with the ‘Social Butterfly’ award.
Our scholarship fund is made possible by Mountaineers like you who invest in a more equitable outdoors. To sustain our Mountaineers Access Program in 2026, we need to raise $60,000 between today and December 2.
Early giving builds momentum and inspires participation. Will you make a donation today?
We believe all people, regardless of financial means, should have access to and feel belonging in the outdoors — together, we make this possible.
