Your gift has the power to create community

A gift in support of Mountaineers scholarships on #GivingTuesday has the power to create strong outdoor communities, and on December 3, all donations received on this global day of giving will directly support scholarships at The Mountaineers.

Every year, volunteer instructors lead hundreds of courses for people to learn to climb, hike, kayak, snowshoe, and more. Courses provide an important entry point for people to build a meaningful relationship with the natural world. In recent years, The Mountaineers has partnered with members and donors to offer need-based scholarships to more than 400 students, all of whom could not participate without financial support.

Scholarships provide access to outdoor recreation and serve as a catalyst for positive change that benefits everyone in our community. Just one scholarship has the power to positively impact hundreds of lives and thousands of acres of public lands.

SCHOLARSHIPS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

For Savanna Pothier, her Mountaineers journey started with a scholarship to participate in the Bellingham branch’s 2018 basic alpine climbing course.

“Scholarships... it is much bigger than the people who receive them. It’s the connectedness to nature for people who couldn’t otherwise do these kinds of activities on their own. Courses authentically build a personal connection to issues like public lands protection and climate. It’s not enough if only the financially privileged care about these places. Scholarships level the playing field so that all people have the chance to connect with and care about our wild places as outdoor recreationists.

I am excited to serve as a volunteer instructor and pass the torch by sharing my love for outdoor recreation and public lands protection with all of the students I will come to know.”

Our community is created by  students like Savanna, and hundreds of other scholarship recipients like her who share their passion as Mountaineers volunteers, foster diversity, and advocate for our outdoor spaces. We are stronger together.

SAVE THE DATE: DEC 3

With Facebook’s pledge to match $7 million in donations made on Facebook, we’re asking you to save  the date for this global day of giving. Help connect more people to the outdoors this #GivingTuesday. All donations received on #GivingTuesday will directly support Mountaineers need-based scholarships.

Anyone can start a social media fundraiser today, but matches will only be made on December 3.
