Trip Report: Mini Mountaineers First Hike

October 8 marked the official kick-off of this year's Seattle Mini Mountaineers! Our littlest Mountaineers braved scattered showers to enjoy a colorful fall walk through Magnuson Park.

Mini Mountaineers is a relatively new family program, designed for kids ages 2-5 and a chaperone to get outside and connect with other outdoorsy families. Every month our Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia branches host many nature-based activities and a variety of hikes for little legs.

A few days ago, we zipped up our jackets and set off for our nature walk around Magnuson Park. We waved at bunnies and birds, counted mushrooms, and watched in amazement as seaplanes landed. We tried to match paint swatches to colors we found in nature, stopping to splash in lots of puddles. We ran around playing red light green light, then took a minute to sit under a tree and listen to the sounds of nature that surrounded us.

Most of all, we let the kids set the pace and supported their exploration of the world around them.

The next Mini Mountaineers event is a nature activity at the Seattle Program Center on October 22. The Minis will have the opportunity to learn about the wonder of fall through crafts, activities, and story time.

Upcoming events include tide-pooling at Discovery Park, a turkey trot, rock climbing, a winter solstice celebration, and nature walks through Seattle parks  Ravenna, Carkeek, Seward, the Arboretum, and more. More events will be planned throughout the year and added to the course page on a rolling basis.

We're looking forward to more adventures with the Mini Mountaineers!
