Going once, going twice, sold! During the 2024 Mountaineers Adventure with Purpose Gala, Fred Northrup Jr. wasn’t just working the event as the evening’s emcee and auctioneer, he was also an active bidder for package number 1024: Brew Your Own Beer with Ghostfish Brewing. At the end of the evening, Fred (a long-time Mountaineers member and superfan) was ultimately the winner of this very unique experience package, and The Mountaineers was the beneficiary of auction proceeds thanks to the donation from our partner and sponsor, Ghostfish Brewing Company. It was a win-win-win situation.
Fast forward almost a year and Fred was finally able to complete his brew! Under the guidance of Ghostfish’s Head Brewer Reid Ackerman, Fred had a few planning sessions designing the recipe and creating the flavor profile. Then, in early May, spent five hours at the brewery, brewing up his recipe.
The new brew is a hazy pale ale called Fred or Alive.
Now, it’s launch time! Fred and Ghostfish are excited to invite you to a special tasting of their new batch.

In 2017, The Mountaineers worked hand-in-hand with brewers at Ghostfish to develop the award-winning and best-selling Kick Step IPA. If you attend community events at The Mountaineers, you will likely find Kick Step among the offered beverages.
The Brew Your Own Beer package was a generous donation made by Ghostfish Brewing to The Mountaineers Gala auction in 2024, and will be available for bidding again in the April 2026 Gala auction.
The 'Brew Your Own Beer' silent auction package that we've sponsored for the Mountaineers Gala has been a successful and fun venture. To learn the art of brewing from someone like our Head Brewer, Reid Ackerman, is quite the experience for folks that enjoy drinking beer, but may not know much about the process of making beer.
