The Mountaineers
We are halfway through Giving Tuesday and have already raised $34,976 for our scholarship fund! In a surprise twist, several long-time supporters of the Mountaineers Access Program have created a matching challenge to double every donation between now and 6pm, up to $10,000. The impact of scholarships is often multiplied organically, as well. Scholarship recipients are more likely to give back as volunteers, and frequently share their new skills with others in their communities. Families that receive scholarships are more likely to continue to go outside together, cultivating a love for the outdoors in the next generation.
Four-year member, Sarah, shares about what receiving a scholarship has meant to her.
“I first joined The Mountaineers using a scholarship for a family membership and to take the Intro to Backpacking course with my child, who was then 16. She is autistic, and being in nature is an immense help for her. Learning to backpack sent her on a journey that all began with this course. She is now more open, more social, and all around happier because of this. And she has much respect, reverence, and love for the outdoors.
I am on social security disability, and am a single parent to a neurodivergent child. Money is extremely tight. Spending time outdoors, getting exercise, fresh air, having the meditative silence that only the forest can bring, getting to meet new people, and having that space with like-minded others is priceless.
“Without the scholarship that I received for the membership, and the scholarships I received for the activities I participate in through The Mountaineers, I would not have this outlet for learning, growth, camaraderie, friendship, health, and peace. I'm very grateful. This has been life-changing!”
