Please join us for an in-person book club on December 9 or January 9 (or both!). At the book club, we'll discuss what we've read and enjoy a potluck dessert.
Our December book, A Year in Paradise by Floyd Schmoe, was first published in 1959 and recaps a year Schmoe and his wife spent living at Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park. They began 1920 as the sole winter caretakers at Paradise Inn. The book includes drawings by the author, as well as historical photographs. Schmoe became a District Ranger, and then the first Naturalist at the Park.
Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas wrote, "Those who know the Pacific Northwest will love this book for the ways in which it puts in new dimensions the life of the meadows, cliffs, and ice fields on Mount Rainier." If you like natural history, quiet reflection, mountain adventure, and snow, then chances are you'll enjoy this book!

Our January book, Spark Birds, is a collection of essays and poetry about birds, previously published in Orion magazine. The book also includes a beautiful selection of reproduced wood cuts. Contributors include Mary Oliver, J. Drew Lanham, and Terry Tempest Williams. This book will delight birders, as well as those who enjoy essays, poetry, and nature writing. One of the essays, "Spark Bird: Bearing Witness to New York's Endangered Species," is available on Orion's website.

About your book club leaders
Danielle Graham and Tom Bancroft hosted a virtual book club during the pandemic that focused on nature and travel in the natural world. They had so much fun, they decided to revive it this winter as an in-person meeting with desserts to share. The book club is open to all members who want to gather with a good book, good food, and good community this winter.
