John Muir: From Yosemite to Mt. Rainier - April 22

 

Both the words and inspiration of John Muir still resonate with us today. He was an adventurer, explorer and mountaineer; but more importantly, he changed the way in which the nation thought about its wilderness. Muir championed a change in thinking that argued our most treasured natural places are not resources to be harvested, but rather refuges to be preserved and protected. He believed in the restorative power of nature and promoted that people should “get closer to nature’s heart”.  Read more…

Mountaineers Sells Historic Snoqualmie Pass Property

The Mountaineers has closed on the sale of its historic Snoqualmie Pass property. The former site of the Snoqualmie Lodge has been sold to Boyne Properties, which manages the Summit at Snoqualmie. The agreement allows the ski area to connect Summit West and Summit Central, while also allowing for a potential easement for the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. Read more…

"Twelve Long Walks" with Cam 'Swami' Honan - April 16

Over 545 days between July 2, 2011 and December 28, 2012, Australian adventurer Cam "Swami" Honan completed an amazing - almost superhuman - feat: through-hiking 12 of the most iconic long trails in 29 US states and 4 Canadian provinces. In the process, he set records for the most miles hiked in a calendar year (10,204 in 2012), the fastest completion of a calendar-year Triple Crown (PCT, CDT and AT in 236 days), and the most dehydrated beans consumed in an 18 month period (123.7 lbs)! Traffic Advisory - Seattle Program Center

Beginning Monday, February 8, Sand Point Way NE will be closed to ALL traffic for a retaining wall replacement project. Traffic will be rerouted to 35th Ave. The main 74th street entrance to the program center will be OPEN during this time. Read more…

Happy Birthday, Fred Beckey!

Fred Beckey, a living legend among Northwest Mountaineers, is a climber, environmentalist, historian, and author. He has achieved enduring recognition as the most imaginative, persistent, and thorough explorer and mountain investigator of the Cascade Range Wilderness. Last year we celebrated Fred as the recipient the of 2015 Mountaineers Lifetime Achievement Award at our BREAKTHROUGH dinner and auction featuring Fred, Colin Haley, Mike Gauthier, and Alex Honnold.  Read more…

Early in 2015, The Mountaineers Board of Directors identified two big goals for the organization -- re-examining it's rich and broad array of outdoor education and piloting some of it in an online format. Banff Film Festival - A Tacoma Tradition

An Appalachian Trail Evening with Heather "Anish" Anderson - Dec. 2, 2015

In September 2015, Washington resident Heather “Anish” Anderson hiked the 2,200 Appalachian Trail in 54 days, 7 hours and 48 minutes. Hiking 16-18 hours a day, she averaged 40 miles a day, setting a new fast-speed thru-hike record for FKT (fastest know time) for an ‘unsupported” hiker on the AT. Read more…
