VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP QUESTIONS

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO VOLUNTEER WITH THE MOUNTAINEERS?

Obviously all the trip leaders I have been on outings with! Cebe Wallace comes primarily to mind for his amazing skills with community building.

WHAT IS THE BEST, FAVORITE, OR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE YOU'VE HAD WITH THE CLUB?

My favorite trip is the one about to happen, or the one that just happened. But if I have to choose one, it would be a women's scramble of Volcanic Neck in 2019 where we found success and community on what is sometimes considered a challenging scramble.

HOW HAS YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE EVOLVED AS YOU'VE GAINED EXPERIENCE?

Over the years, I have become more relaxed, seeking the input of others, stepping back so that others can step forward.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU DO ON TRIPS TO CREATE AN INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL SKILLS AND BACKGROUNDS?

I like to start with the pre-trip email, creating a great community tone, a trick I learned from Cebe. I also have enjoyed doing activities with the Mountain-Queers affinity group and women-only affinity groups.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING LEADERS IN THE MOUNTAINEERS COMMUNITY?

Just do it!

What do you wish other members knew about volunteering with The Mountaineers?

Watch out as it can become addictive - not just leading trips, but getting involved in courses and committees.

WHAT IS ONE SURPRISING THING YOU'VE LEARNED OR GAINED THROUGH VOLUNTEERING WITH THE MOUNTAINEERS?

Perhaps not so surprising, but a greater sense of humor and trust in others are things I really value.
