Meet Our Park's Adventurer Lace Thornberg, who, with one last weekend of this challenge left to go, is ready to overnight it in Olympic National Park.
her adventure
Lace's adventure goal is to go on her first backpacking trip of the summer. "Finally!" she says. A couple of doozy illnesses sent her back to “hiking square one” this summer, and not being able to backpack or climb the way she normally would have has confirmed just how important backpacking is to Lace—physically and mentally. "I don't want to go backpacking," she says, "I need to go backpacking."
Now that Lace is able to carry some weight and gain some elevation, her goal is to hike the High Divide Loop in Olympic National Park, one of the trails featured in 100 Classic Hikes: Washington by Mountaineers Books. It's 20.5 miles, with 4,175 feet of gain. "That might not sound hard," she says, "but it’s leaps and bounds further than what I was able to do in June." Now, just wish her luck on scoring walk-up permits!
why it matters
Lace's goal is to raise $500 for Mountaineer's youth programs. She is taking part in this challenge so that The Mountaineers can introduce youth across Washington to all the lessons and pleasures that the great outdoors have to offer.
