Meet Terri, a Foothills hike and urban walk leader who is inspired to give back to the outdoor community that has provided her with so many beautiful experiences.

What brought you to the Pacific Northwest?

I’m a multi-generational Washingtonian. My father’s family homesteaded in the Bothell area, and my mother’s, in the Wenatchee area.

What attracted you to The Mountaineers?

I grew up hiking and backpacking. My parents weren’t members of The Mountaineers, but they were members of REI. I received a copy of Freedom of the Hills as a gift and would spend hours reading it, along with REI catalogs.

While not my intended career path, I enjoyed a 40+ year career in the outdoor recreation industry, including 30 years at REI. During my time at REI, I periodically interacted with The Mountaineers. As I began to think about retirement, I wanted to find communities of people to enjoy the outdoors with, and continue to learn and give back to the outdoor community that has provided so much for me.

What is your favorite volunteer memory with The Mountaineers?

I began volunteering after taking the Wilderness Navigation course. I enjoy helping others gain confidence with analog & digital navigation. After a long hiatus from hiking, I wanted to get started again and found the Go Hike course. It is such a welcoming, supportive, and inspiring community! I just completed the Mentored Leader course and obtained my Hike and Urban Walk Leader badges. I look forward to providing opportunities for new and returning hikers to find their place in The Mountaineers.

What are your favorite activities and/or places in the Pacific Northwest?

Hiking, sailing, and fly fishing are my current activities. I hope to re-engage with skiing and snowshoeing. Spray Park at Mount Rainier and the Enchantments (in particular, the basin below Dragontail Peak) are two places forever etched in my memory.
