Meet Shelly Dearmon, a Foothills hike and urban walk leader who has received many Key Leader, Key Instructor, and Super Volunteer badges, and whose happy place is being in the forest with a group of hikers.

What brought you to the Pacific Northwest?

I grew up in Washington - born and raised in Mountlake Terrace.

What attracted you to The Mountaineers?

My sister, Jenifer Brink! She has been a Mountaineers member and hike leader for 20 years. We were planning a trip to Machu Picchu in 2019 for her 40th birthday celebration and my 50th birthday celebration. She gently encouraged me to go on a couple hikes in preparation. That gentle encouragement led to participating in the Conditioning Hiking Series... and I was hooked! Being in the forest with a group of hikers is my happy place. And if there is an alpine lake to jump in, all the better!

What is your favorite volunteer memory with The Mountaineers?

As a hike leader, it is a rewarding experience guiding someone on a new trail, seeing their reaction, and sharing in the "ohhs" and "ahhs" with them. Another favorite memory has to be seeing a hiker accomplish a tough hike that they never thought they could do. Seeing their joy is priceless.

What are your favorite activities and/or places in the Pacific Northwest?

Swimming in Lake Valhalla, then sitting on the sandy beach eating cold leftover pizza as I drip dry in the sun!
