Meet Rob, a Foothills backpack, hike, snowshoe, and urban walk leader, Key Leader, Super Volunteer, and Mountaineers Leader of the Year who loves to spread the joy of the outdoors and mentor new leaders.
I was born and raised in the Seattle area. My parents took all of us kids hiking and I haven't stopped since. At age 40, I started backpacking. At 50, I joined The Mountaineers.
I first joined The Mountaineers to gain new skills (particularly, at that time, to learn more about snow travel). I naively joined the Basic Alpine Scrambling course, and boy - that course got me in shape and opened my eyes to all sorts of outdoor possibilities. I've now settled into backpacking as my main activity focus with day hikes, snowshoes, and urban walks keeping me busy in the winter.
I volunteer with The Mountaineers so I can spread the joy of the outdoors. I particularly enjoy mentoring new leaders as there is a satisfying multiplier-effect. One of my favorite Mountaineers memories was spotting a wolverine in a remote area of Mount Rainier National Park. My favorite outdoor activity is going on a backpack trip to a new place that I've never been before. I enjoy trip planning: the puzzle of figuring it all out and the excitement of the unknown.
