Meet Barbara Folmer, a Foothills backpack, snowshoe, hike, and naturalist leader who has received many Key Leader and Super Volunteer badges, and can’t remember a time when she didn’t hike!

What brought you to the Pacific Northwest?

I am a Pacific Northwest native and can't remember a time when I didn't hike. Like most kids of that time, I spent a lot of time outdoors and adventure began from our backyards.

What attracted you to The Mountaineers?

I joined The Mountaineers to take the Snowshoeing class as I didn't know anyone else who wanted to go snowshoeing. It was so much fun. I was soon engaged in other activities and became a leader.

What are your favorite memories volunteering with The Mountaineers?

Some of my best memories of leading trips were in the PCT series that Chris Caviezel started. It ran for three years, and we had tons of fun. Mazama Ridge on a Bluebird day is always unforgettable.

What are you favorite activities and/or places in the Pacific Northwest?

I love the Wednesday after-hours hikes, because people who think the best thing they can do after work on a Wednesday is hike are my kind of people. It really makes me happy when members tell me that a trip they did with me is a favorite memory of theirs.

I love the ecosystem diversity of our state. I haven't been everywhere in Washington, but I’ve done many hikes in different seasons.
