Sade never dreamed she’d participate in something like the Alpine Scrambling course.
“A lot of these outdoor spaces are typically spaces where I stick out,” she told us. “Because some of these activities are also expensive, it fosters an exclusive and non-diverse atmosphere which makes it even more intimidating to break into. The Mountaineers scholarship gave me the extra assurance of 'yes, I can do this.'”
The Mountaineers Access Program provides scholarships to ensure that everyone can access outdoor education regardless of their ability to pay. Helping someone overcome financial barriers is a key to reducing other barriers, fostering a community where everybody feels they can belong.
We are celebrating this global day of generosity by directing all gifts made today to the Mountaineers Access Program. Our goal today is to raise $60,000 to fund our scholarship program for the upcoming winter season and beyond.
Will you support our scholarship fund to help say “Welcome, you belong here!” to more people like Sade?
“By giving individuals the resources they need to at least start trying to be these spaces, it allows us to feel that we can make it; it allows us to do something we've only ever dreamed of. And that has a domino effect for the rest of the community.”
A majority of scholarship applications come in during the winter months as people register for courses, clinics, memberships, and youth camps. Your donation today will help us meet this critical demand and work to create a more equitable community where all find belonging and can access the outdoors.
Sade’s message to those who donate is simple: “Thank you for believing that everyone has a right to participate in outdoor activities, but acknowledging it is not easy getting there. Thank you for believing in people who just need that extra push. Thanks for getting our feet in that door and inspiring us to crack it open.”
