Breakthrough - Auction Sneak Peek

A breakthrough is defined as "a sudden, dramatic, and important discovery or development" or as "an instance of achieving success". At The Mountaineers, we have 109 years worth of breakthroughs in our history - starting at the very beginning: 1906.

Established by 151 visionaries, over half of the first Mountaineers were women. They wore veils and long petticoats but summitted mountains all the same.

Mountainers wore the first boots on the Olympics and the first skis on Mt. Rainier. We named peaks and explored waterways and built trails to uncover unique and challenging landscapes. We helped create the North Cascades Wilderness Area and pass the National Wilderness Act. Then we wrote the book on Mountaineering. Literally.

Today, as we look toward our second century of exploration, The Mountaineers are seeking to once again change the face of the outdoors. We launched youth programs just four years ago, and since have given thousands of young people new outdoor memories, many of whom would not otherwise have the opportunity to explore the outdoors. Soon we break ground on a new slab climbing structure - the first and only of it's kind in the country. It will revolutionize the way we teach climbing and scrambling techniques. And we're embarking on a new initiative using technology to make the outdoors more accessible to everyone.
