Fred Beckey leaves a lasting legacy. Over the course of seven decades, Fred amassed more first ascents than anyone else on earth and left an indelible mark on the global climbing community. Fred’s unblinking focus on climbing earned him enduring recognition as the most imaginative, persistent, and thorough mountain investigator of his time, and the moniker of “one of America’s most colorful and eccentric mountaineers”. He sought to escape the artificial civilized order and find self-rejuvenation in the mountains. The term “Dirtbag” was coined to capture his off-the-grid spirit. Fred is a symbol of endurance and resilience, building a legacy counted in rope-lengths.
