Glacial Heritage Preserve

Trip

Stewardship - Glacial Heritage Preserve

We will go on a hiking tour around the preserve led by representatives from CNLM and explore this beautiful and imperiled ecosystem. After lunch we will spend a couple of hours doing restoration work, likely pulling Scotch Broom.

We will meet at Glacial Heritage Preserve at 9:00 am.

Directions to Glacial Heritage Preserve (from I-5 South)

- Take exit 95 and continue straight (west) on Maytown Rd toward the town of Little Rock.

- Follow Maytown Rd until you reach the stop sign in Little Rock; continue straight through the town onto 128th Street.

- At "T" (end of 128th) take a left and follow Mima Rd for 2.7 miles

- After passing Mima Nursery, you will see a small tractor sign followed shortly by a gravel road on your left and brown sign marking Glacial Heritage Preserve.

- Take a left onto the gravel road.

- Follow road around corners and through white gate. At 4-way gravel intersection take a right and follow road up the little hill, then stay left and follow road to volunteer house and parking lot.

For the second year in a row the annual Prairie Appreciation Day, the only time this beautiful prairie is accessible to the general public, is being modified due to Covid-19.  Instead, small groups will be led through the prairie by CNLM staff members and volunteers. We will learn about the unique plants that thrive on the prairie. Hopefully, the Camas will be in full bloom. Bird enthusiasts should bring their binoculars. I think it's important that we spend a couple of hours doing hands-on restoration work to better appreciate what CNLM and their volunteers have been doing for years to maintain these unique prairie ecosystems.  We'll plan on meeting at the Preserve at 9:00 am and should finish around 3:00 pm.
