San Juan Islands & Lummi Island from Gooseberry Point

Trip

Sea Kayak - Portage Island Circumnavigation

Join us as we take advantage of the high tides and circumnavigate Portage Island. The entrance to Portage Bay is blocked when tides are under about 5 feet so this is a nice opportunity to go all the way around the island.

  • We will launch from Gooseberry Point and paddle south in Hale Passage.  Because of the high tide all day the "portage" between Portage Bay and Hale Passage will be water instead of sand (needs about a 5 ft tide to be able to paddle through, forecast is for between 7.5 - 9.5 feet). We will pass this opening and continue to paddle south to the south end of Portage Island. We will then head east then north and paddle around Portage Island exiting Portage Bay and returning back to Gooseberry Point.
  • As Portage Island is Lummi Nation property we may be unable to take a snack/lunch break on the island. PLEASE BE COMFORTABLE WITH PADDLING 9nm WITHOUT GETTING OUT OF BOATS WHEN BREAKING. We will take a paddle break or 2 as needed but may need to remain on the water.
  • Please be prepared for winter conditions. We will not launch if conditions are forecasted above the rating for this trip but the weather doesn't always go as planned. Dry Suits required and a warm drink and snacks you can eat in your boat are highly recommended!

We'll meet at the Northwest corner of the Gooseberry Point lot next to the Lummi Island Ferry  at 9:00am for a 10:00am launch.  We can unload boats here and then move cars to legal parking spots along Lummi View Drive, just south of the ferry dock (across from Finkbonner Rd). There is a port-a-potty near the launch point. https://www.whatcomcounty.us/DocumentCenter/View/1184/Gooseberry-Point-Parking-Map-PDF?bidId=
