Please reach out to me before registering for the climb as I'd like to get your thoughts on options as well as expectations for the climb. I will remove participants from the roster if we haven't had a conversation first.
We will attempt the North Ridge on Baker as a ski carryover with the intention of descending the Coleman Deming route on skis. You should be comfortable with the following:
- Following on WI3. Skis can be hauled up separately if needed.
- Glacier skiing in suboptimal conditions. We'll do our best to reach the summit in time to ski corn on the CD, however you should be ready to ski crud (like having a so-so day on the Muir snowfield).
- Ski-specific crevasse rescue techniques including building a haul system using skis as snow anchors, and self-extraction starting with skis on your feet. I'll post a self-extraction refresher clinic at the Seattle Program Center prior to the climb.
Here are my proposed options for this climb:
- If the Grouse Creek approach is still viable, we could do this in a single push car to car. This would be a pretty big day, but we wouldn't have to carry overnight gear.
- An alternative would be to carry overnight gear and camp by the Black Buttes. We could make approach day a full value day by going on a tour after setting up camp, then summiting the next day.
- If the Grouse Creek approach is not viable, we'd give the summer trail a go. I'd consider this an overnight trip as shenanigans is generally involved when the summer trail is kinda partially covered in snow.
We likely won't need the entire holiday weekend for this climb, but I'm blocking the whole weekend so we can pick the best weather day(s).
To be arranged by the climbing team.
