First thing's first: this scramble has a short section of real exposure. Please keep this in mind before requesting permission! I may ask some qualifying questions if your Mountaineers history is sparse.
We will hike up the Mount Si Main Trail to the bottom of the haystack where we'll take a short break to discuss the scramble portion, observe conditions, and perhaps have a snack and some water. We will aim to reach the base of the Haystack in 2.5 hours or less.
We'll then scramble up the Haystack! Most of the route is hemmed in and doesn't feel very open although steep, but the final section to the summit is slabby and much more exposed. If the weather is good, we can lunch on the summit and enjoy the views.
After a careful return to the saddle at the top of the gulley we can visit the rarely visited North Peak or instead descend back to the main trail, depending on the mood of the group.
This is not a conditioner, despite my trip history, so think light!
- Meet at the Mount Si Trailhead (https://maps.app.goo.gl/puiutQmdBorE7Ecz8) at 8:00AM, ready to go.
- Carpooling is encouraged as the trailhead can get pretty busy on weekends.
- A Discover Pass is required for each vehicle.
- Parking in North Bend and carpooling to the TH is a good option as well, and Safeway at Exit 31 is great place to meet up and leave a car.
