Joe Riis

Joe Riis is a National Geographic contributing photographer and Photography Fellow at the Wyoming Migration Initiative. Trained as a wildlife biologist, Riis’s photographs of the Grand Teton pronghorn migration documented this phenomenon for the first time ever. He later campaigned successfully for six wildlife over- and underpasses to help maintain the migration corridor. He has received a National Geographic Young Explorer grant (2008) and earned an Emmy Award for his pronghorn cinematography on the National Geographic Great Migrations series (2011). He lives in a cabin he built in rural South Dakota on the site of his great-grandparents’ prairie homestead.
