Outdoor Leadership Seminar - Tacoma - 2017

Outdoor Leadership Course

Outdoor Leadership Seminar

Build and enhance your outdoor leadership skills through facilitated real-life scenarios, discussion and problem solving.

This one-day leadership seminar is held at the Mountaineers’ Tacoma Program Center.  Registration and a continental breakfast takes place between 8-8:30am.  We end by 4:30pm.  The course is for both current and prospective leaders of Mountaineers trips and activities. We’ll address situations from scenarios that have occured on actual trips – the good, the bad, and the ugly.... These thought-provoking discussions are a mix of the participants’ own experiences, the scenarios, and John Graham's outstanding book "Outdoor Leadership". In addition, we will use the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) leadership model to clarify roles and communication opportunities.  This event is not activity-specific. Snowshoers, skiers, kayakers, hikers, climbers, sailors, scramblers, dancers, bikers, photographers are all encouraged to participate. The course fee includes breakfast, lunch and refreshments throughout the day. Please note: 1) Students are expected to obtain copies of "Outdoor Leadership" by John Graham and have read Chapters 1 - 9 before class. The Mountaineers Bookstore, Amazon (new, used, and digital), other online sources, and some libraries carry it. 2) No refunds will be given for cancellations after the registration deadline. 3) To fulfill a requirement for another course (Advanced Scrambles, Intermediate Climbing, or Sea Kayak.) requires participation the entire day.
