In  Journeys North: The Pacific Crest Trail, legendary trail angel and thru-hiker Barney Scout Mann spins a compelling story of six people as they hike from Mexico to Canada.  National Geographic calls Mann “arguably the dean of America’s long distance trails.” Journeys North was just long listed as one of four titles up for the Banff Film and Book Festivals Best Adventure Travel Book.

Mann, known as Scout on the trail, and his wife, Sandy, known as Frodo, set out on the 2650-mile trail in 2007, a year of extreme weather conditions in which only a third of PCT hikers finished.  Along the way, their lives became intertwined with four of their fellow hikers: Blazer, Nadine, Tony, and Dalton.

A once-in-a-generation drought, severe winter storms, shattered bones, illnesses, and helicopter rescues strengthen the hikers’ bond as they make their way northward. Through their experiences on the trail, Mann reveals the universality of our humanity and what it means to belong.

Barney Scout Mann has hiked the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails.  He is president of the Partnership for the National Trails System.  Mann has been recognized with a Lowell Thomas Journalism Award and is the coauthor of The Pacific Crest Trail: Exploring America’s Wilderness Trail and author of The Continental Divide Trial: Exploring America’s Ridgeline Trail.  He and his wife, Sandy, live in San Diego and have hosted more than 7,000 PCT hikers.  Visit him online at BarneyScoutMann.com.
