The Explorers & Jr. MACers will spend the day kayaking together!

Please visit this page on Squaxin Island to learn more about the Squaxin Island Tribe, who have lived on these lands and waters for countless centuries. The tribe currently owns and manages Squaxin Island which is next to Hope Island as well as the Arcadia Boat Ramp where we will launch from.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Kayaks: If you have your own kayak, you are encouraged to bring it. We will rent boats from Kamilche Adventures, which is close to the launch point and owned by a Squaxin tribal elder.

Parking: Discover Pass Required

Notes on Drysuits/wetsuits: In general for sea kayaking, expect to get wet and minimize feeling cold. At a minimum your feet and butt will get wet. People often underestimate how cold and uncomfortable being a bit wet makes them. No one will get turned away for not having wetsuits, but they are recommended--an accidental slip or tip is otherwise likely to end your day and derail things for the group.

Fishing/Harvesting Shellfish: If you plan to fish or harvest shellfish, please obtain the proper license from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and be aware of harvesting limits/restrictions.

Notes on dry bags:
  • No need to buy dry bags for this trip. Some are available to borrow, and garbage bags can be used.
  • If you are thinking about buying dry bags:
    • Drybags for watersports are generally more heavy duty and truly waterproof than lightweight drybags for backpacking. Either are fine for this trip, but be careful with light duty bags as smashing into kayaks and pulling out can be a lot of wear and tear on light duty bags.
  • 10 to 15 Liter bags work well for clothes, sleeping bags and tents
  • 3 to 5 Liter bags work well for first aid kits, your lunch, toiletries, etc.
  • >15 Liter bags typically don't fit well into kayaks. More smaller bags is generally better
