A in-town dry tooling trip to The Barn Dry Tooling Gym to continue building the sport-specific fitness required to confidently climb ice. This is an advanced trip with prerequisites. See leader's notes for details.

Please see Barn page @ link above for details, but here is a brief: 

parking is streetside or driveway right side. One bathroom in the main house, first door on right. Barn is without HVAC, open air structure, doors open. Carpet on pads. No shoes in the gym, rockshoes only. Helmets required. 

No Trip Sheet. Carl will send e-mail with any updates required. Meet at Barn. Arrange carpooling independently, no carpool page.

This is an advanced trip. Prerequisites:

  • Confidence and ample experience leading at least 5.9 sport.
  • Experience glacier climbing and familiarity with ice axe use, as a base for learning to use ice tools
  • Ability to handle poor conditions - adequate layers & experience to stay warm in freezing/wet weather

Required Equipment

Helmets and eye-pro required. Bring your own helmet and eye-pro. 

Some tools will be brought down by Carl (2 pairs, the Nomics and the Ergo), and then the Barn will provide tools for up to 4 students. 

Rock shoes only. No street shoes allowed in The Barn. Bring whatever you'd bring to go to the climbing gym, water, snacks, etc. 

A lightweight pair of grippy gloves, such as these from OR is really nice to help with your grip when your hands get sweaty. A pair of baseball or football style gloves with grippy silicon or other rubberized palms would also suffice.
