At Deception pass the moving water gives us a perfect school room to practice handling our boats in more challenging conditions. Plus it is a beautiful place to paddle.
Who is this for?
Priority is given to those who have taken the first of the "Paddling in Moving Water" series, or similar experience. Participants should be familiar with edging their boat and bracing. Comfortable with capsize, wet exit, and buddy rescue are essential.
You should be comfortable getting in and out of your kayak in flat water. Rescues should be fairly routine. A little fear about doing them in Deception Pass is fine but you should be up for the adventure.
Plan
The first of this series, we were mainly paddling and maneuvering our kayak in the ebb current at Canoe Pass, which is generally friendlier than the flood current. This time you will be introduced to the flood current at Canoe Pass. Depending on the group and condition we may paddle to Room of Doom and eddy in and out there at the end of the flood current.
After lunch we will paddle back to Canoe Pass and practice eddy in and out, and ferrying while the ebb current is building. These maneuvers should be familiar for those who have participated on the first of this series.
There is always a place to get out of moving water and some shore to get out on for a short break.
Launch at 8:15 from Bowman Bay
