Eddies and Currents Sea Kayak Clinic - Deception Pass

Come learn and play in the currents in the beautiful and interesting dynamic waters in the Deception Pass area.   This clinic is part of the 3-day camping and paddling event organized by the Seattle branch.   So hopefully participants in this clinic will join the group for other paddles over the weekend and/or camping.  There are more details to the camping and paddling event - search for the post on the Mountaineers site for: Sea Kayak - Deception Pass State Park Campsite.

During the clinic we will teach and review key concepts for paddling in moving water, including reading the current, using a range, crossing an eddyline, eddy hopping, and rescues in current.  Clinic is designed for beginners to intermediates in terms of paddling  in currents so the focus will be on learning and refining skills and becoming more comfortable in moving water.  We will be in currents up to 4 knots.

Participants should be at least somewhat familiar with edging their kayak and bracing.  Paddling in dynamic water means that you will need to be ready to edge and brace at times, but this will be a supportive environment and you are encouraged to try new things and learn new skills.   If you do capsize others will be nearby to help, but being comfortable with wet exits and assisted rescues is essential and will be part of the day.   Those who have played in moving water few times before are welcome and will be working on refining skills and challenging themselves.    We will focus on safety, confidence, new skills, and of course fun.

We will stop midday for a lunch break on a beach near Deception Pass, so bring lunch, snacks, and water.   Helmet required (bike helmet okay).

Meet at Cornet Bay at 8 am and be ready to launch at 9 am.  Discover Pass required for parking.   There is a restroom at the launch site.   We will return to the launch by 4pm.
